Meet Master Brent Eklund

Master Brent Eklund is a Kukkiwon Certified Black Belt and a valued member of the Aspire Performance Center coaching team. Having trained under both Master Roger Willard and Master Len Lawrence, Master Brent has developed his own unique approach to martial arts by combining the strengths of both instructors into a well-rounded style focused on skill, strategy, and physical preparation.

Through years of training, Master Brent has developed a dynamic style that blends a strong offensive game with exceptional defensive ability. His ability to attack with purpose while also controlling distance, timing, and defense allows him to help students become more complete martial artists.

Master Brent believes that physical conditioning is a critical part of martial arts success. As the leader of Aspire’s cardio and conditioning programs, he challenges students to reach levels of fitness they often never believed were possible. His training helps athletes develop the endurance, strength, and mental toughness needed to perform at their best when matches become difficult and fatigue begins to impact technique.

At the highest levels of competition, the difference is often made in the final moments—when one athlete is still able to maintain proper technique, focus, and intensity while another begins to slow down. Master Brent’s conditioning programs help Aspire athletes develop that advantage.

However, this level of conditioning is about much more than competition. In a self-defense situation, the ability to stay calm, think clearly, and continue to respond effectively when fatigue sets in can make a critical difference. Master Brent teaches students that being physically prepared is an important part of being prepared to protect themselves and others.

A United States Navy veteran, Master Brent brings the same discipline, commitment, and determination he developed through his service into every training session. He understands that success comes from consistency, hard work, and the willingness to push beyond perceived limits.

For Master Brent, martial arts is about developing the complete athlete and helping every student discover they are capable of more than they thought possible.

Meet Master Len Lawrence

Master Len Lawrence is the Co-Founder of Aspire Performance Center. With decades of martial arts experience, Master’s Degrees in Education and Business, and nearly two decades of teaching at the collegiate level, Master Len combines technical expertise with a deep understanding of how students learn, lead, and grow.

When Master Len and Master Roger Willard founded Aspire in 2014, their vision was to create a program that developed not only successful competitors, but confident and well-rounded martial artists. Through years of dedication, Aspire athletes have earned 50 National Championship titles across poomsae, sparring, and board breaking.

An 11-time National Champion, Master Len has experienced the challenges and rewards of competition firsthand. His accomplishments across multiple areas of competition reflect the well-rounded approach he brings to coaching. That experience has shaped his teaching philosophy, where he focuses on helping each athlete understand their strengths, develop their skills, and find the approach that allows them to succeed.

Master Len believes every student learns differently. His philosophy is simple: great instructors do not force every student into the same mold—they recognize individual strengths and help each person develop into the best martial artist they can become.

Known for his intelligent, defensive sparring style, Master Len teaches athletes the importance of timing, distance, strategy, and patience. His approach provides a valuable complement to Master Roger’s offensive style, giving students the opportunity to learn different strategies and develop the style that best fits them.

Is Taekwondo Good for Adults in Their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s?

When many people hear the word Taekwondo, they picture children kicking, teenagers competing, or young adults practicing martial arts.

But Taekwondo isn’t just for kids.

It can be an incredibly rewarding form of exercise, personal development, and lifelong activity for adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s.

At Aspire Performance Center, we have something pretty special that demonstrates this.

Our own story includes adults who started Taekwondo in their 30s and continued training through their 40s and 50s, while another member of our Aspire family started in his 60s and continues training at 70.

Together, their stories span more than 40 years of adult life.

Master Roger started in his 30s and is now in his 50s.

Master Len started in his 30s and is now in his late 50s.

Ron started in his 60s and is now 70.

Three different people.

Three different reasons for starting.

Three very different journeys.

But they all demonstrate the same thing:

You’re never too old to start something new.

And you’re never too old to keep getting better.

You Don’t Have to Be Young to Start Taekwondo

One of the biggest misconceptions about martial arts is that you have to start as a child to become good at it.

That’s simply not true.

Adults come to Taekwondo for many different reasons.

Some want to lose weight.

Some want a more interesting workout than a treadmill or traditional weight training.

Some want to improve flexibility, balance, coordination, and mobility.

Some want to learn self-defense.

And some simply want to find something challenging and fun that gets them out of the house and around other people.

Master Roger Willard and Master Len Lawrence are great examples.

Both started Taekwondo in their 30s.

Today, Master Roger is in his 50s and Master Len is in his late 50s—and both continue to train, teach, learn, and challenge themselves through Taekwondo.

Their journey demonstrates something important:

You don’t have to start young, and you don’t have to stop simply because you’re getting older.

Master Roger: Finding an Alternative to Traditional Weight Training

Master Roger Willard began Taekwondo in his 30s, but his journey actually started because of his son.

Roger’s 4-year-old son had started Taekwondo, and watching his son train sparked Roger’s interest in trying it himself.

At the time, Roger was looking for an alternative to traditional weight training and treadmill workouts.

He was also dealing with a nerve issue in his shoulder that made lifting heavy weights increasingly difficult.

Taekwondo offered something traditional weight training couldn’t provide in the same way.

Training incorporated flexibility, mobility, balance, coordination, cardiovascular exercise, bodyweight movements, kicking, striking, and technique development without requiring every workout to revolve around lifting heavy weights.

For Roger, it was a way to stay active while continuing to challenge himself physically.

What started as an alternative form of exercise—and a way to share something with his young son—eventually became a lifelong passion.

Roger’s son continued training as he grew up and eventually became an adult martial artist himself.

Today, two decades later, Master Roger is still training and teaching Taekwondo in his 50s.

What began with a 4-year-old boy stepping onto the mat ultimately became a lifelong journey for both father and son.

Master Len: Looking for Fitness and Adult Interaction

Master Len Lawrence also began Taekwondo in his 30s.

His reasons were different.

Len had gained weight and wanted to find an alternative workout. But there was another important factor in his life at the time.

He was a stay-at-home dad with four children who were all toddlers.

He wanted an opportunity to get out of the house, exercise, and interact with other adults.

Taekwondo gave him all three.

And something else happened.

He found a training partner.

Eventually, all four of Len’s children started Taekwondo after he did.

And just like their father, they didn’t simply participate for a short time. All four continued training into adulthood.

What began as Len’s personal decision to find a better workout and connect with other adults eventually became something shared by his entire family.

Taekwondo became part of their family’s lives for years—and for some, it became a lifelong pursuit.

Len’s story is another example of how martial arts can become much more than exercise.

It can become something you share with the people you love.

Two Very Different People, One Shared Journey

Master Roger and Master Len came to Taekwondo from very different backgrounds.

If it weren’t for Taekwondo, they probably would never have met.

And even if they had crossed paths, there’s no reason to believe they would have become friends.

But they met on the Taekwondo floor.

They started training together from the beginning and quickly became training partners. They pushed each other, challenged each other, held each other accountable, and encouraged one another to try things neither may have attempted on their own.

What started as two adults looking for a better way to exercise became something much bigger.

They became friends.

Then best friends.

And that friendship has lasted for decades.

Together, they’ve experienced the highs and lows of training, competition, teaching, and life. They’ve celebrated each other’s accomplishments, challenged each other when one needed a push, and continued to grow together as martial artists.

Eventually, their shared passion for Taekwondo led to something neither of them could have imagined when they first walked into class in their 30s.

They became co-founders of Aspire.

Today, Master Roger and Master Len are best friends, training partners, instructors, and co-founders of Aspire Performance Center.

Their story is a powerful reminder that the benefits of martial arts aren’t always measured in pounds lost, kicks learned, or belts earned.

Sometimes, the most important things you gain are the people you meet along the way.

Taekwondo changed both of their lives—not because they started young, but because they decided to start.

Two Beginners Become Training Partners

When Master Roger and Master Len started training together, neither one started as a lifelong martial artist.

They were two adults looking for a better way to exercise and challenge themselves.

Instead of training alone, they pushed each other.

They held each other accountable.

They challenged each other to try new techniques.

And when one of them improved, the other had another reason to keep working.

That partnership has lasted for decades.

Today, Master Roger and Master Len have a combined 16 national championships.

Neither started Taekwondo as a child with the goal of becoming a national champion.

They started because they wanted to get in better shape and find something different.

That’s an important lesson for anyone considering starting Taekwondo as an adult:

You don’t have to know where the journey will take you.

You just have to be willing to start.

Then There’s Ron

Ron Stratton’s story is different.

Ron joined Aspire later in life, beginning Taekwondo approximately four years ago while he was in his 60s.

When he started, he was dealing with significant physical challenges.

At the time, Ron had difficulty walking to his hunting stand.

The trip was physically demanding enough that he had to stop and take multiple breaks along the way.

His balance was also severely limited.

Ron could barely lift one foot off the ground without raising his arms to regain his balance before immediately putting the foot back down.

Fast-forward four years.

The difference is remarkable.

Ron at 70: Still Getting Better

Today, Ron is 70 years old.

And he’s doing things physically that would have been difficult for him when he started.

He can now walk to his hunting stand with ease.

He’s regularly fishing on the Grand River.

In fact, Ron was recently featured in a fishing publication after catching a monster catfish.

And his Taekwondo progress continues.

Ron can now perform a kick approximately waist-high without using his arms to maintain his balance.

Recently, he showed Master Roger that he had developed enough strength, balance, and flexibility to perform lunges without using his hands for balance or relying on his hands to help himself get back up.

Those aren’t just martial arts techniques.

They’re movements that demonstrate strength, balance, mobility, coordination, and confidence.

And Ron isn’t finished.

A 70-Year-Old Celebrating 50 Years of Marriage

Ron recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary.

As part of the celebration, Ron decided to demonstrate some of the skills he had developed through his Taekwondo training.

At 70 years old, he broke five cement patio blocks with a palm strike.

Then he broke another five 1-inch-thick boards with a palm strike.

This wasn’t a martial arts demonstration at a tournament or a special Taekwondo event.

It was Ron celebrating 50 years of marriage with his family and friends—and showing them something he had accomplished through years of dedication and training.

It’s a pretty remarkable way for a 70-year-old to celebrate a milestone.

But perhaps the most remarkable part of Ron’s story isn’t what he broke.

It’s what he can do today compared with where he started.

Four years ago, Ron had difficulty walking to his hunting stand without stopping multiple times along the way. He could barely lift one foot off the ground without raising his arms to regain his balance and immediately putting his foot back down.

Today, he walks to his hunting stand with ease.

He’s regularly fishing on the Grand River and was recently featured in a fishing publication after catching a monster catfish.

He can kick approximately waist-high without using his arms to maintain his balance.

And recently, Ron showed Master Roger that he had developed enough strength, balance, and flexibility to perform lunges without using his hands for balance or using his hands to help himself get back up.

Ron is 70 years old.

And he’s still improving.

Ron has told us that he credits much of this progress to our Masters and the Taekwondo program at Aspire Performance Center.

That’s what makes his story so inspiring.

He didn’t start because he was already in great shape. He started because he wanted to improve.

And he kept showing up.

What Can Taekwondo Offer Adults?

Everyone’s journey will be different, but Taekwondo can provide adults with an opportunity to work on many areas of physical fitness and personal development.

Flexibility

Kicking and martial arts techniques require movement through a range of motion. Regular flexibility work can help adults maintain mobility as they age.

Balance

Single-leg movements, kicking techniques, footwork, and controlled movement provide opportunities to practice balance and coordination.

Strength

Taekwondo uses the entire body. Students develop strength through kicks, strikes, stances, bodyweight movements, drills, and repeated practice.

Cardiovascular Fitness

Martial arts training can provide an active workout that gets the heart rate up without requiring an hour on a treadmill.

Coordination

Learning martial arts requires the brain and body to work together. Students must learn to coordinate their hands, feet, eyes, balance, and timing.

Mental Focus

Adults aren’t just exercising their bodies. They’re learning techniques, remembering combinations, responding to commands, and continually learning new skills.

Confidence

Perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of martial arts is watching adults accomplish things they once thought they couldn’t do.

That confidence can extend beyond the martial arts school.

Taekwondo in Your 30s

Your 30s can be an excellent time to begin Taekwondo.

You may be looking for something more interesting than a traditional gym workout, or you may simply want an activity that challenges both your body and mind.

You don’t need to be flexible when you start.

You don’t need to be in great shape.

And you certainly don’t need to know how to kick.

That’s what training is for.

Taekwondo in Your 40s

In your 40s, fitness can start to look different than it did in your 20s.

You may have less time, more responsibilities, and a body that doesn’t always appreciate the workouts you used to do.

Taekwondo can provide a different approach to fitness by combining movement, flexibility, strength, coordination, cardiovascular exercise, and skill development.

And there’s another benefit that shouldn’t be overlooked:

Community.

Training with other adults can make exercise more enjoyable and provide accountability.

Master Roger and Master Len experienced that firsthand.

Taekwondo in Your 50s

Starting something new in your 50s can be intimidating.

But you don’t have to compete.

You don’t have to perform advanced kicks.

You don’t have to train like a 20-year-old.

You simply need to train at a level appropriate for you.

Taekwondo can be adapted to individual abilities and fitness levels, allowing adults to continue learning and progressing.

Master Roger is proof that starting in your 30s doesn’t mean your Taekwondo journey has to slow down when you reach your 50s.

Master Len is proof that you can continue training, learning, and challenging yourself well into your late 50s.

Taekwondo in Your 60s

Your 60s don’t have to mean giving up physical challenges.

In fact, maintaining strength, mobility, coordination, and balance can become increasingly important as we age.

Taekwondo provides opportunities to work on all of these areas while giving you something to learn and work toward.

And then there’s Ron.

Ron started Taekwondo in his 60s.

He didn’t start because he was already in great physical condition.

He started where he was.

Four years later, he’s 70 and doing things he couldn’t comfortably do when he began.

His story is a reminder that your starting point doesn’t have to determine your destination.

Taekwondo in Your 70s

Ron is living proof that starting Taekwondo in your 60s—and continuing your journey into your 70s—is possible.

His story isn’t about becoming a world champion.

It’s about becoming a better version of himself.

Four years ago, walking to his hunting stand required multiple breaks.

Today, he walks there with ease.

Four years ago, he struggled to lift one foot off the ground without using his arms for balance.

Today, he can kick waist-high without using his arms to balance.

He can perform lunges without using his hands to help himself down or back up.

And at 70, he is still learning, training, fishing, hunting, and challenging himself.

That’s what martial arts can be about at any age.

You Don’t Have to Start Young. You Just Have to Start.

Master Roger started Taekwondo in his 30s. Today, he’s in his 50s and still training.

Master Len started in his 30s. Today, he’s in his late 50s and still training.

Ron started Taekwondo in his 60s. Today, he’s 70 and continues to challenge himself.

Their journeys are completely different, but they have something important in common:

They started—and they kept going.

Roger and Len certainly didn’t know that their decision to find an alternative to traditional workouts would eventually lead to a combined 16 national championships.

They didn’t know it would lead to a decades-long friendship.

They didn’t know they would eventually become co-founders of Aspire.

Ron didn’t know that four years after starting, he’d be walking to his hunting stand with ease, kicking waist-high without using his arms for balance, or breaking boards and patio blocks at his 50th wedding anniversary celebration.

But they kept showing up.

That’s the real lesson.

Taekwondo doesn’t have to be something you did when you were young.

It can be something you start in your 30s, continue through your 40s and 50s, start or continue in your 60s, and enjoy well into your 70s and beyond.

You’re never too old to start something new.

You’re never too old to keep getting better.

Your Taekwondo journey can start today.

Taekwondo for Adults at Aspire Performance Center

At Aspire Performance Center, we believe martial arts should be accessible to people at different ages and stages of life.

You don’t have to be an athlete.

You don’t have to be flexible.

You don’t have to be strong.

And you don’t have to have martial arts experience.

You simply need to be willing to start where you are.

Our adult Taekwondo program provides an opportunity to exercise, learn new skills, improve flexibility and coordination, challenge yourself, and become part of a community.

And you never know where that first class might lead.

Maybe you’ll simply find a workout you enjoy.

Maybe you’ll make new friends.

Maybe you’ll discover abilities you didn’t know you had.

Or maybe, like Master Roger, Master Len, and Ron, you’ll discover that you’re capable of far more than you ever imagined.

You’re never too old to start something new.

Can Martial Arts Help Children With ADHD?

Parents of children with ADHD are often looking for activities that do more than simply keep their child busy. They want something that can help their child build confidence, develop self-discipline, improve focus, and learn skills they can carry into everyday life.

So, can martial arts help children with ADHD?

At Aspire Performance Center, we have seen firsthand how martial arts can be a positive experience for children with ADHD.

Over the years, we’ve had great success working with students with ADHD through our martial arts programs. While every child is different, we have had parents tell us that they have noticed meaningful changes in their child’s ability to focus, listen, follow directions, and control the urge to interrupt.

Martial arts isn’t a treatment or cure for ADHD, but it can provide children with a structured environment where they can practice important skills while staying physically active and having fun.

How Can Martial Arts Help a Child With ADHD?

Martial arts provide a unique combination of physical activity, structure, repetition, and individual attention. These elements can create an environment where children have opportunities to practice skills that are important both inside and outside the martial arts school.

1. Martial Arts Require Focus

A martial arts class isn’t something a student can simply “tune out.”

Students have to listen to instructions, watch demonstrations, remember techniques, respond to commands, and pay attention to what is happening around them.

For a child who struggles with maintaining attention, this provides frequent opportunities to practice focusing for short periods of time.

Over time, those small periods of focused attention can become longer and more consistent.

2. Students Learn to Listen Before Acting

One of the things we frequently hear from parents is that their child has become better at listening and not interrupting.

Martial arts naturally reinforces the concept:

Listen → Process → Respond.

Students are expected to listen to the instructor before beginning a technique or responding to a command.

That doesn’t mean a child will suddenly stop interrupting or become perfectly focused. ADHD doesn’t disappear because a child takes martial arts.

Instead, martial arts gives children a structured environment where they can repeatedly practice these skills.

3. Repetition Helps Build Habits

Martial arts involves a tremendous amount of repetition.

Students may practice the same technique many times before moving on to something new. They learn that improvement doesn’t always happen immediately and that making a mistake is part of learning.

For children with ADHD, that repetition can provide valuable opportunities to practice staying with a task even when it becomes challenging or repetitive.

4. Physical Activity Can Be Beneficial

Martial arts are physically active.

Students aren’t sitting at a desk for an entire class. They move, kick, punch, block, jump, balance, and perform drills.

Physical activity can be an important part of a healthy lifestyle for all children, including children with ADHD.

At Aspire Performance Center, we combine that physical activity with structured instruction so students are working both their bodies and their minds.

5. Martial Arts Provide Clear Expectations

Children tend to do well when they understand what is expected of them.

Martial arts classes provide clear rules and routines.

Students learn that there are appropriate times to talk, listen, move, practice, and interact with their classmates.

The expectations are consistent, and students receive frequent opportunities to practice meeting those expectations.

6. Progress Can Build Confidence

For some children with ADHD, traditional classroom or athletic environments can leave them feeling like they are constantly being corrected for what they are doing wrong.

Martial arts can provide a different experience.

Students work toward clearly defined goals and can see their progress over time.

They learn new techniques, earn stripes and belts, develop physical skills, and accomplish things that may have initially seemed difficult.

That progress can help build confidence and a positive attitude toward learning.

What Have Aspire Parents Told Us?

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching children with ADHD is hearing from their parents about changes they have noticed outside the dojo.

Over the years, parents have shared that their children have:

Improved their ability to focus

Become better at listening to instructions

Interrupted less frequently

Developed greater patience

Become more confident

Learned to follow directions more consistently

Become more comfortable with structured environments

Learned to keep working when something is difficult

These are parent observations and individual experiences—not guarantees that every child will experience the same results.

Every child with ADHD is different, and martial arts is not a replacement for professional medical or behavioral care.

But we’ve seen enough positive experiences over the years to believe that martial arts can be a valuable activity for many children with ADHD.

Why the Right Martial Arts Environment Matters

Not every martial arts school is the same.

For children with ADHD, the instructor and training environment can make a significant difference.

At Aspire Performance Center, our goal isn’t simply to teach children how to kick and punch. We want to help them become more confident, disciplined, respectful, and capable individuals.

That means understanding that children learn differently.

Some students may need an additional reminder to pay attention. Some may need instructions repeated. Some may need to move more frequently. Others may simply need an instructor who recognizes their strengths instead of focusing only on their challenges.

We believe those differences don’t have to prevent a child from succeeding.

Martial Arts Isn’t About Making a Child “Fit the Mold”

A child with ADHD doesn’t need to become someone else to succeed in martial arts.

They need an environment where they can learn how to use their strengths while developing the skills that may be more challenging for them.

Martial arts provides opportunities to practice those skills every class:

Focus.

Listening.

Self-control.

Persistence.

Confidence.

Respect.

And perhaps most importantly, students learn that progress doesn’t happen all at once.

They take one class, one technique, one challenge, and one accomplishment at a time.

It’s simply showing up and discovering what’s possible.

Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, feel confident, and discover their own potential. At Aspire Performance Center, we believe martial arts should be accessible to every child—including those with autism, ADHD, sensory processing challenges, anxiety, or other developmental differences.

That’s why we created our Sensory-Friendly Martial Arts Program.

Our goal isn’t simply to teach martial arts techniques. Our mission is to help children develop confidence, focus, coordination, and resilience in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and encouraged to succeed.

A Different Approach to Martial Arts

Every child learns differently.

Some children thrive in a traditional class setting, while others benefit from a quieter environment, smaller class sizes, and more individualized instruction. Our Sensory-Friendly Martial Arts class is designed specifically with those children in mind.

Classes are structured to provide:

A calm and welcoming atmosphere

Smaller class sizes

Predictable routines

Positive reinforcement

Individualized instruction

Opportunities to learn at each child’s own pace

Patience, encouragement, and understanding

Rather than expecting children to adapt to our program, we adapt our teaching to meet each child’s unique strengths and needs.

Led by Professionals Who Understand Children

Our Sensory-Friendly Martial Arts program is led by husband-and-wife team Master Roger and Mrs. Annie Willard, whose combined experience gives families something few martial arts schools can offer.

Mrs. Willard dedicated her career to serving children as a special education teacher, helping students with a wide variety of learning styles and developmental needs. Her compassion, dedication, and commitment to student success earned her recognition from the Michigan Education Association (MEA) for excellence in teaching. She brings that same patience, encouragement, and individualized approach to every child who walks into Aspire Performance Center.

Master Roger Willard brings over 25 years of law enforcement experience, including serving as a detective assigned to a Children’s Advocacy Center investigating crimes involving children. His specialized training in child development, trauma-informed communication, and working with children from all backgrounds helps create an environment where students feel safe, respected, and supported.

Together, Roger and Annie combine decades of experience in education, child development, and youth mentorship with a shared passion for helping children build confidence, discipline, and resilience. Their goal is simple: to help every child discover what they are capable of achieving, one success at a time.

More Than Kicks and Punches

Parents often tell us they notice changes that go far beyond martial arts.

As students grow in confidence, they often begin developing stronger:

Focus and attention

Listening skills

Balance and coordination

Self-control

Emotional regulation

Social interaction

Respect for others

Self-confidence

Independence

Willingness to try new things

Every child progresses at their own pace, and we celebrate every milestone along the way. Whether it’s participating in class for the first time, following directions independently, earning a new belt, or simply smiling with pride after accomplishing something they once thought was impossible, every success matters.

A Safe Environment Families Can Trust

When parents trust us with their children, we take that responsibility seriously.

Every instructor at Aspire Performance Center is:

Background checked

Certified through USA Taekwondo or USA Boxing

SafeSport trained

Committed to creating a positive, respectful, and supportive learning environment

Our focus is always on helping children feel safe, accepted, and encouraged while building skills that will benefit them for years to come.

Every Child Deserves the Opportunity to Succeed

At Aspire Performance Center, we believe success isn’t measured by how fast a child earns a belt.

Success is measured by the confidence they gain.

It’s measured by the smile after accomplishing something they didn’t think they could do.

It’s measured by a parent saying, “I’ve never seen my child this confident.”

Those moments are why we teach.

If you’re looking for a sensory-friendly martial arts program in the Muskegon, Norton Shores, or West Michigan area where your child will be met with patience, understanding, and experienced instruction, we invite you to visit Aspire Performance Center.

Parents of children with ADHD are often searching for activities that do more than just help burn off energy. They want something that helps their child build confidence, improve focus, develop discipline, and learn how to manage emotions in a positive environment.

Martial arts can be a powerful tool to help children develop these important life skills.

At Aspire Performance Center in Muskegon, we believe martial arts is about much more than kicks and punches. Our programs are designed to help children become more focused, confident, respectful, and prepared for challenges both inside and outside the training area.

How Does Martial Arts Help Children With ADHD?

1. Martial Arts Improves Focus and Attention

Many children with ADHD have difficulty staying focused in traditional environments. Martial arts training provides a structured setting where students learn to listen, follow instructions, and complete specific tasks.

During a martial arts class, students practice:

Following multi-step directions

Remembering techniques and combinations

Waiting their turn

Staying engaged during drills

Setting and achieving goals

Because martial arts requires both physical and mental focus, children learn how to control their attention and apply those skills in other areas of life, including school and home.

2. Martial Arts Teaches Self-Control and Discipline

One of the most important lessons in martial arts is that true strength comes from control.

Students learn that martial arts is not about fighting. It is about learning responsibility, respect, and understanding how to use their skills appropriately.

Through consistent training, children develop:

Patience

Emotional control

Respect for others

The ability to handle frustration

Confidence in making good choices

These lessons can be especially valuable for children who struggle with impulsivity or managing strong emotions.

3. Physical Activity Helps Children Release Energy in a Positive Way

Children with ADHD often have a lot of energy, and finding a productive outlet can make a tremendous difference.

Martial arts provides a combination of:

Cardiovascular exercise

Strength development

Coordination training

Balance and body awareness

Goal-based challenges

Instead of being told to sit still, children learn how to channel their energy into something productive and rewarding.

4. Martial Arts Builds Confidence and Self-Esteem

Many children with ADHD experience challenges that can affect their confidence. They may hear more about what they struggle with than what they do well.

Martial arts creates opportunities for success through:

Learning new skills

Earning belt advancements

Overcoming challenges

Receiving positive encouragement

Being part of a team environment

Every accomplishment, from learning a new technique to earning a new belt, reinforces the idea that hard work and persistence lead to success.

5. A Structured Environment Helps Children Thrive

Children often do best when expectations are clear and consistent. Martial arts provides a predictable structure where students understand:

How class begins and ends

How to show respect

How to interact with instructors and classmates

How to work toward personal goals

At Aspire Performance Center, our instructors focus on creating a positive learning environment where every student is encouraged to improve at their own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions About Martial Arts and ADHD

What is the best martial art for a child with ADHD?

The best martial art for a child with ADHD is one that provides structure, positive coaching, consistent expectations, and opportunities for success.

Programs such as Taekwondo, kickboxing, and other martial arts disciplines can help children develop focus, coordination, confidence, and self-control. The most important factor is finding an instructor and training environment that understands children and creates a positive learning experience.

At Aspire Performance Center, our instructors focus on helping each student improve at their own pace while building skills that extend beyond the training floor.

Can martial arts help with behavior problems?

Martial arts can help children develop important skills that may improve behavior, including listening, patience, respect, and emotional control.

Rather than simply correcting behavior, martial arts teaches children how to make better choices, set goals, and take responsibility for their actions.

Through consistent training, students learn that discipline is not about punishment — it is about learning how to control their actions, overcome challenges, and become their best selves.

At what age can my child start martial arts?

Many children can begin martial arts as young as age 5. The ideal starting age depends on the child’s maturity, attention span, and ability to participate in a structured class.

At Aspire Performance Center, our youth programs help children build coordination, listening skills, confidence, and respect while having fun in a positive environment.

Are martial arts safe for children with ADHD?

Learning to focus during a martial arts class helps children practice paying attention, following instructions, and working toward long-term goals.

Where Champions Are Built — In Life and In Sport.

🌟 Discover the Difference at Aspire Performance Center 🌟For some families, a past experience with a martial arts program may not have been what they hoped for. If that’s been the case for you or your child, it’s important to know that one experience does not define what martial arts can be.

At Aspire Performance Center, we believe martial arts should be taught in a positive, respectful, and encouraging environment—one that supports growth both on and off the mat.

Our instructors are committed to helping students develop confidence, discipline, and character, while always being treated with dignity and care. You’ll never find negativity, disrespect, or inappropriate behavior here. Instead, we focus on teaching with professionalism, patience, and purpose.

What truly sets Aspire Performance Center apart is the depth of experience and integrity behind our instruction. Our team brings backgrounds in law enforcement, education, pastoral care, security, and military service, combined with advanced training and internationally recognized Taekwondo credentials. We proudly maintain Kukkiwon and Chang Moo Kwan certifications, ensuring our instruction is authentic, verified, and held to the highest standards.

As one parent recently shared, they appreciated that we could “show the receipts”—a reflection of our transparency, credibility, and dedication to doing things the right way.

Aspire Performance Center is more than a martial arts school. It’s a community built on trust, respect, and long-term personal development. We invite you to experience the difference for yourself and see what a positive martial arts environment can truly feel like.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family.
